To the point sharpening

provides knife sharpening services to business and residential customers in The Portland area. I use primarily use Japanese waterstones, but also diamond abrasives, or whatever the job calls for. I charge a flat fee to sharpen any knife with repairs or modifications extra.

Sharpening priced as listed
in the dropdown menu below:

General Sharpening PRicing information
All blades, shears, tools, and whatever else you need sharpened are charged at a flat rate by the piece. That covers sharpening and minor repairs like small knife tip repairs, small chips, small bolster reductions. Major repairs like chunks out of your blade, re-profiling of the edge, thinning, rust removal, and cleaning up your really dirty blades carry extra charges in addition to the sharpening cost. There are some add on services you can add to your sharpening to make it pop that much more.
Standard Sharpening service
This is the most popular service and takes good care of the majority of kitchen and pocket knives regardless of size or origin.  I have sharpened more than a 100,000 knives this way to many happy customers. I use a horizontal Japanese waterstone wheel, made by Naniwa Abrasives to sharpen each blade to 1000 grit. If you want something finer let me know and we can talk. Then what's left of a burr on the edge I polish off with a leather wheel or leather strop loaded with an abrasive compound or emulsion, different steels get different strops with different compounds on them. If your knife is really dull or I need to fix a small chip, reduce the bolster, or put a new tip on your knife it sees my professional knifemaker's belt sander.
All this is only $8
Garden tools, pruners, loppers, and food processor blades are sharpened on a belt sander and are $10
Axes, hatchets, and lawnmower blades are sharpened on the belt sander too and are $15
If I missed something let me know and we can talk about it or maybe it's just farther down on the dropdown menu.

freehand stone sharpening
Many Japanese and other higher quality knives require a more delicate touch or maybe just a different type of finish.  Those knives I sharpen on Japanese water stones from Naniwa, Nano-hone, Imanishi, and Shapton up to 6000 grit. I finish that off with a stropping on a leather or cork strop loaded with some Gunny Juice diamond emulsion or Borachrome stropping compound. This is next level sharpness. This service is for high end knives that are in good shape with no need for repairs or thinning, see the repairs dropdown for more information on that. This service is $20 for your standard double beveled knife and $30 and up for wide beveled and single beveled knives.
scissor and shear sharpening
I've sharpened tens of thousands of scissors and shears for kitchens, crafts, sewing, barber and industrial work. I have one customer who I sharpen at least 150 pair per week, so I stay in practice for sure.  I sharpen all those on my Twice as Sharp scissor sharpener which is used in scissor factories. I can sharpen most shears with a German style bevel just like your craft scissors but don't work on Japanese convexed bevels. This service is $10
Guided whetstone Sharpening
Knives that require a perfectly shaped bevel at an exact angle a human cannot produce on its own needs sharpening with a guided system. These are mostly pocket knives for the discerning everyday carry enthusiast or collector. People who tell me that they need their knife to have that perfect 17 degree angle, or whatever their preference, need this service. Also knives made of powdered metals, "super steels", and other tough to sharpen steels are good candidates for this service since I need to use diamond, CBN, or ceramic abrasives to properly do the job. I have quite the collection of those stones for my TSPROF KO3 Pro system and also my EdgePro knife sharpening system. This service is $20 per blade for sharpening a satin or everyday working edge, $8 extra for highly polished or mirror edges for those showpieces and shelf queens, and $5 additional for tanto blades.
